Santal’s language, life and religionSantali is the prime language spoken by the Santal Tribe. Santals have a typical tribal lifestyle. Basic needs are fulfilled by forest trees and plants. They engage in cultivation and so many work as day laborers in the colliery, tea gardens, and on the high ways. Dancing and music are the streamline of Santals. They believe in supernatural beings and ancestral spirits. They don’t have a temple of their own and neither do they worship any idols. Their religion is animistic, spirits (bongas) are everywhere around them.

Santal’s society, governance and festivalsThe Santal society is characterized by democratic equality. The society is devoid of caste hierarchy and therefore, the Santal’s is a casteless society. By birth no person, clan group is superior or inferior. Santal women enjoy much more freedom than their counterparts in Indian Society. The Santal villages are social and political entities with great cohesion and continuity. The village council controls the entire social system of the Santals. This body is responsible for making decisions about a village’s socioeconomic condition..
